Intentions

Decide now, while it’s calm

A plan tells you what the numbers do. It cannot tell you what you would do about them. Intentions is where you write that down, in your own words, while nothing is going wrong. Each sample plan comes with a record already written, so you can see what one looks like.

Landfall keeps it exactly as you wrote it, and offers it back when a fall shows up.

Read how it works
A saved intentions record: the author and the date, a note that this is their own plan and not advice, then each answer under its own heading

Why it helps

A fall is the worst moment to decide what to do about one

Markets fall on their own timetable, not yours. When one does, the news is loud and the figures are red, and the choice that feels urgent may not be the one you would make on a calm day. Intentions keeps that calm day’s thinking where you will find it.

Your reasons, in your words

What this money is for and why you chose this approach, written while you had time to think it through. It is the first thing you read when you come back.

A promise made in advance

You choose the size of a fall and what you intend to do if it comes. Decided now, there is nothing to decide in the moment.

What the plan said that day

Each version keeps the plan’s figures from the day you wrote it, so you see what you were looking at then, not only what has changed since.

Someone to speak to first

One question asks what you will do before changing course, and who you will talk to. The report is ready to take with you.

The intentions form: each question above a box for your answer, with the promise if markets fall as a size of fall and what you intend to do

Write it

The questions, answered in your own words

What the money is for and when you will draw on it. How you intend to respond to a large fall, and what would change your mind. A note from the calm author of the plan to its frightened reader.

Any question can be left blank. Nothing is marked, scored or summarised.

The plan as it stands, written out beneath the record: the people, the pots, the spending, one-off events, the strategy and the assumptions, then the author’s signature and the date

Read it back

Every version, dated, beside the plan it was written for

Your answers come back word for word, newest version first. Beneath each is what the plan assumed that day, and a new version never replaces the old.

When the stress test draws a downside, it offers your intentions back to you.

Keep it on paper

A report to keep, or to take to someone you trust

A cover that says this is your own plan, in your own words. Your intentions in full. Then the plan at a glance, its charts and its tables, all dated.

Keep it with your other papers, or bring it to the person you said you would speak to first.

My promise if markets fall

If my portfolio falls by 30%, then I intend to hold off on the extras for a while and leave the pot invested.

Decided now, while calm, so there is nothing to decide in the moment.

Yours, and only yours

Landfall never scores what you wrote, never summarises it and never suggests an answer. It stays on your device with the plan.
