Making your first plan
Rough figures first. Accuracy is easier once you can see the shape.
The quickest way in is the new plan wizard. Five short steps — about you, earnings, State Pension, pots and spending — then “Save initial plan”, and you have a plan on screen.
Use the figures you can remember. A plan built from memory in ten minutes tells you more than a perfect one you never finish, and nothing you enter is fixed.
- Answer the wizard with your best guess at each figure.
- Read the verdict, the first figure on the plan.
- Open “Edit plan”, marked with a dot until you first do, and replace the guesses that move the answer most. Those are usually spending and pot balances. Each section of Edit plan says what it holds while it is closed, so open the one you came for.
- Come back when a statement arrives and put the real number in.
The plan saves as you type. The figures above the form move with each change, so you can see what a number is worth as you set it. Each person can pick a colour under their name in Edit plan, and the plan draws them in it everywhere.
A change can be taken back. Undo reverses the last change and asks first, naming the kind of change and its section. Redo puts it back. Both stand beside the sun and moon at the top of the plan’s page, and in the desktop app’s Edit menu.
